Tip #5: Conduct group activities and increase engagement using breakout rooms

Hello everyone!

We're back with another tips and tricks article. In today's post, we will focus on breakout rooms and how to use them effectively to increase engagement and interaction among learners and trainers.

What is a breakout room?
Breakout rooms are separate virtual rooms in a live online session. They are used to split the participants into small, individual groups. Breakout rooms come in handy to give separate instructions for a particular group of learners in a virtual classroom without disturbing the entire session.

Why are breakout rooms used?
The purpose of breakout rooms is to divide the participants of a virtual session into small groups to offer varying course content based on specific needs.

For example, if you have 100 participants in your live classroom with varying levels of expertise in the subject, you can split them into multiple groups and assign individual trainers to make classes distinct.

Tips to use breakout rooms efficiently
Breakout rooms contribute to better engagement, focused student collaboration, and active learning in an online session.

Here are some important tips to help you improve the effectiveness of breakout rooms:

Assign tasks: Assigning individual tasks to different groups of learners in a live session will result in better team participation and improve team bonding. The trainer can assign various collaborative projects to each group, like presentations, researching a particular topic, or writing an article.

Opinion polls: Conducting opinion polls about a particular topic in different breakout rooms helps assess the learners' understanding before starting a new topic. This also provides the trainers with real-time feedback to formulate personalized instruction and lesson plans for each group of learners.

Group discussion: Private brainstorming sessions for team-based activities like group discussions and debates can be conducted efficiently using breakout rooms. Each group can discuss their points with their team members without getting interrupted or vying for time with the larger class. This helps create a more harmonious learning community where learners of every level can participate and enjoy team collaboration.

Online quizzes: The trainers can eliminate boredom in breakout rooms by including fun and interactive elements to the training session. Conducting team-based online quizzes is one of the best ways to impart team collaboration and eliminate boredom.
